The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
